What Is Gallbladder Stone?
Gallstones are hardened deposits that form in your gallbladder, a small, pear-shaped organ located on the right side of your abdomen, just beneath your liver. The gallbladder stores bile, a digestive fluid produced by your liver.
Gallstones can range in size from a grain of sand to a golf ball. They can be made up of cholesterol, bilirubin, or a combination of both.
Cholesterol gallstones are the most common type, while pigment gallstones are made of bilirubin, a chemical that is produced when your body breaks down red blood cells.
Gallstones may not cause any symptoms, but if a gallstone becomes lodged in a duct and blocks the flow of bile, you may experience sudden and intensifying pain in your upper right abdomen. This is known as a gallbladder attack or biliary colic.
Other symptoms of gallstones can include pain in your back or right shoulder, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, bloating, fever, chills, and even Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes).
If you experience any of these symptoms, don't hesitate to consult Dr. Rajarshi Mitra for diagnosis and treatment.
Treatment options for gallstones may include surgery to remove the gallbladder, medications to dissolve the gallstones, or shock wave therapy to break up the gallstones.
How To Recover From Gallstones?
Recovering from gallbladder stones depends on the treatment approach chosen, which is usually based on the severity of symptoms and the presence of complications.
The most common treatment for symptomatic gallstones is surgical removal of the gallbladder (cholecystectomy). Here's what the recovery process may involve:
Post-operative care: After surgery, you'll be monitored for a few hours before being discharged. Follow Dr. Mitra's instructions regarding wound care, diet, and activity restrictions.
Pain management: You may experience some discomfort after surgery. Take prescribed pain medications as directed and use a heating pad to alleviate pain.
Gradual return to diet: Start with clear liquids and slowly progress to a normal diet as tolerated. Avoid fatty, greasy, or spicy foods that can cause digestive discomfort.
Rest and activity: Get plenty of rest in the first few days after surgery. Gradually increase your activity level as you feel better, but avoid strenuous activities for at least 2-4 weeks.
Follow-up appointments: Attend scheduled follow-up visits with Dr. Rajarshi Mitra to monitor your recovery progress after gallstone removal procedure.
