What Is Hernia?
A hernia is a condition in which an organ, intestine, or fatty tissue squeezes through a weak spot or a hole in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue. Hernias often occur at the abdominal wall, but they can also appear in the upper thigh, belly button, and groin areas.
The most common types of hernias are Inguinal hernia (occurs in the inner groin), Incisional hernia (occurs through an incision or scar in the abdomen), femoral hernia (occurs in the upper thigh/outer groin), Umbilical hernia (occurs at the belly button), and Hiatal hernia (occurs inside the abdomen, along the upper stomach/diaphragm).
Hernias are caused by a combination of muscle weakness and strain, which can be due to factors such as aging, chronic coughing, damage from injury or surgery, and heavy lifting.
Symptoms may include a noticeable lump or bulge in the affected area, pain, discomfort, and a feeling of weakness or pressure.
However, some hernias have no symptoms and are only discovered during a routine physical or a medical exam for an unrelated problem.
Treatment for a hernia usually involves surgery to repair the opening in the muscle wall.
Untreated hernias can lead to potentially serious complications like obstruction and strangulation of the trapped tissue.
How To Recover From Hernia?
Recovering from a hernia typically involves surgical repair followed by a period of rest and gradual return to normal activities. The specific recovery process may vary depending on the type of hernia and the surgical approach used (open or laparoscopic). Here are some general steps to help with recovery:
Follow post-operative instructions: Carefully adhere to Dr. Rajarshi Mitra's instructions regarding wound care, diet, and activity restrictions.
Manage pain: Take prescribed pain medications as directed to control discomfort. Gradually reduce the use of pain medication as your condition improves.
Get plenty of rest: Allow your body to heal by getting enough sleep and rest, especially in the first few days after surgery.
Gradually increase activity: Slowly resume normal activities as tolerated. Avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, or exercise until Dr. Rajarshi Mitra allows it.
Eat a balanced diet: Consume a nutritious diet to support healing. Drink plenty of fluids and eat fiber-rich foods to prevent constipation.
Use a support pillow: When coughing or sneezing, hold a pillow against the surgical site to provide support and minimize discomfort.
